Considering becoming a P.A. [Sep. 26th, 2009|09:13 am]
Physician Assistants of LJ

So I'm considering becoming a P.A. but I really don't understand the process. I'm a high school senior and I'm interested in the P.A. program at UF. Do I apply for the program? Or do I have to get a major in something first? I'm planning to take some of the pre-requisites at SJR-Community College since I am Dual-Enrolled. Please help.

Journalist Looking For Rural Health Workers [Sep. 4th, 2008|12:36 pm]
Physician Assistants of LJ
My name is Maggie Koerth-Baker. I'm a journalist working with American Profile magazine on a story about lung health, chronic lung disease, and outdoor air quality in small towns and rural areas. I saw that this community had "rural health" as an interest and thought you might be able to help.

I'm trying to find a healthcare worker (nurse, doctor, PA, or specialist) with experience in this area. Ideally, because part of what the magazine does is profiles, I'd like to find a healthcare worker who has some personal experience with lung health, either living in or growing up in a town plauged by chronic lung disease (like a mining community, for instance) or having dealt with lung health issues in their own family.

If you're interested or if you can point me in the direction who might be, please let me know. You can reach me by email at maggie (dot) koerth (at) gmail.com.

And many thanks!

2. What would you all say is the difference btwn being a PA and being an MD? do PA's truly get respect in the world of medicine?

Good PA forums [Sep. 23rd, 2007|01:15 pm]
Physician Assistants of LJ

Hi, I just noticed this community. I'm really shocked no one has mentioned physicianassistantforum.com yet. It's an unbelievable resource with scores of knowledgeable PAs.

Also, you might want to check out Student Doctor Network, another useful forum--although not PA specific.

Shadowing [Jul. 24th, 2007|02:11 pm]
Physician Assistants of LJ

Alright, so on my to-do list for things I need to do to get into PA school is that I need to shadow two more PA's. I wanted one to be in internal medicine and one to be in Primary Care.

So my question is:

How does one find PA's who are open to being shadowed (especially ones in internal medicine since there aren't as many around), and how do you broach the topic with them?

How exactly does a PA differ from an NP?

Be honest please =) [May. 13th, 2007|12:17 am]

I currently have about 2 + 2 + 4 = 8 classes left in college! I am on the quarter system.

I currently have a GPA 3.61.

I'm not too happy about it because uh, it was a lot higher before Ochem put my GPA in a headlock! I am a biology major as well as an honors student (so I had to fulfill my general education curriculum with LOVELY 500-level courses, blah). Does this look like a good academic background for a PA school? I am still working on getting healthcare experience --I'm trying to get a job as a patient care aide at my school's hospital, and I will take a year off after undergrad to work in the medical field any way possible.

Thanks for your input, my fellow aspiring and current PAs!

From Nursing to PA? [Apr. 26th, 2007|08:52 am]
Physician Assistants of LJ

Hi, did you decide against nursing to become a PA? If so, why? What was your reasoning? I'd love to meet people who did so.

Also, what patient care experience did you get before getting into PA school? Is there any type that is better than another?

I have medical assistant, nursing assistant, and EMT training, and I worked as a medical assistant before. I'm planning to do so again.

Thank you. Here's how I decided to go from nursing to PA.

How did you get your patient contact/care experience? [Apr. 19th, 2007|05:25 pm]
Physician Assistants of LJ
I think the subject says it all! I am probably going to graduate in spring 2008, and would like to start PA school in Sept or Aug 2010. I am not sure how to go about getting patient care experience. A lot of people seemed to have gone the EMT route--but I don't think this will be an option for me (jacked up back + lifting...bad idea for all parties involved!).

Fill a girl in!

So everyone at work is hyped about the whole PA thing. It's like the number one goal of the therapist where I work.
