Shadowing [Jul. 24th, 2007|02:11 pm]
Physician Assistants of LJ

Alright, so on my to-do list for things I need to do to get into PA school is that I need to shadow two more PA's. I wanted one to be in internal medicine and one to be in Primary Care.

So my question is:

How does one find PA's who are open to being shadowed (especially ones in internal medicine since there aren't as many around), and how do you broach the topic with them?

Well, the best way to do find a PA to shadow is to know one personally. Unfortunately, that's not usually the most practical. :)

Honestly, what I did when I was applying to PA school was to open the phonebook and look at the ads for all the physicians' offices in the area; I called every one that had PAs listed, and I eventually found one office that was willing to set me up with the two PAs they had working there.

What exactly did you say whenever you called somewhere?

I have intense phone anxiety and it's difficult for me to think of what exactly I should say or ask without coming off extremely rude.

Me too! I have really bad phone anxiety too!

It was really hard for me to do this (and continue to do this) since I have the same problem.

I consider it a testament to how much I want to be a PA that I even can do this! I've been calling up sporadically since I posted this and what I've been doing is getting a piece of paper and writing down exactly what I have to say and then reading from it

"Hi, my name is Thelonius Monk, I'm interested in getting into Physician Assistant School and I'm looking for PA's to shadow. I was wondering if there were any Physician Assistant's working in your office and if there are if I could talk to them or leave them a message inquiring if they would be interested in having someone shadow them."

From my experience so far I am usually interrupted somewhere in the middle of this statement and told there are no PAs working there, or that they have to redirect me to someone else. Most people are usually pretty pleasant considering they are working in a busy doctor's office and as long as you are concise and pleasant they don't mind at all.

So, how's your hunt going?

I'm having a ton of trouble. I was on the phone for almost an hour yesterday trying to talk to someone who knew what the hell I was talking about.

This is so frustrating!!!
